Children’s Department 



BUMC has a warm and welcoming place for children to learn about God’s never-ending love. Enriching and fun activities are held throughout the year for children and their families.  Safe Sanctuary Policy is practiced in all areas.  All children from birth to grade 6 are invited to Sunday School which meets at 9:30 am in the lower level Children’s classrooms.  Children from Kindergarten through 6th grade meet in their respective classes with Children’s Department Coordinator, Julie Spyker and her team of volunteers.  The Cradle Roll room located on the third level in the preschool wing has been renovated and is a bright and cheery room where caregivers provide lots of attention and love.  It is for the precious littlest ones of our church from birth until two years old.  Miss Grace is there on Sunday's from 9:00 a.m. until the 10:30 service is over.  The Preschool room is right next door to the Cradle Roll room and is for ages 2 through pre-k.  Classes taught by Miss Sue are provided following the children's message for Trinity Life Center, during the 9:30 am Sunday School hour, and also the 10:30 am Worship Service.  


The Children's Praise Team directed by Chad and Deanna Thatcher also meets in the lower level children's department after the children's message at Trinity Life Center.

Youth Choir  

A singing group open to children in grades K-8.  We rehearse for 30 minutes on Sunday mornings during the church service in the Sunday School room downstairs  The choir sings for worship services once a month and performs a musical once a year.

Vacation Bible School   

Vacation Bible School is for children of the church and a great outreach to the children in the community.  Every year, for one week over the summer, we host VBS in our church.  All children from preschool age to 6th grade are welcome to participate.  We are also always in need of volunteers.

“Shine”   is a group for 7-12th grade students. 

Our activities include outings, games, crafts, Bible study, contests, and food.  Do you have an idea for us?  “Shine” meets each Sunday afternoon or evening (see bulletin or Lamplighter for schedule).  New participants and adult helpers welcome.

“Momentum”    is a group for students in grades 4, 5 and 6. 

Make new friends while having fun with games, sports, crafts, and food!  We meet once or twice a month and are always happy to see new faces.  Check the worship program or Lamplighter for the schedule.

Cub Scouts  



Being a Cub Scout is the first step in Scouting.  This group is for boys age 7 or first grade through age 10 or fifth grade.  Pack 40 meets at Bethlehem UMC on Mondays from 6:30-7:30 pm.  Cub Scouting means "doing."—like camping, hiking, racing model cars, going on field trips, or doing projects that help your hometown and the people who live there.

Boy Scouts  

“A scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.”  The Boy Scout program is for boys who are 11 years old or are at least ten years old and have finished the fifth grade, or are at least ten years old and have earned the Arrow of Light rank as a Cub Scout.  Troop 40 meets every Monday night from 7:00-8:30 pm at Bethlehem UMC.  A lot of camping, fishing, biking, and other things outdoors and indoors are included.

Sermon Study Class (Table Talk)  

This open class looks at the sermon from each Sunday on the very day it is preached!

Join us in the New Fellowship Hall from 9:45am-10:15am for a sermon reveiw/preview

with open discussion and a "take-home" application from each week's message.

TLC Intergenerational Class (Thinking Like Christ)  

We recognize the importance of Christian worship, study, prayer and service to each other and our community.  We meet immediately following the Contemporary Service.  Studies are chosen by group members.  There is always an open chair!

The Wired Word:  Contemporary Issues Class  


We look at contemporary issues through the lens of scripture.  Focus is on a prominent issue in the news each week.  We’d love to have you join us and add your thoughts and understandings.  Meet on Sundays at 9:20 am on lower level of the main building.                                                                                                                                          



Fellowship Class 


This informal discussion group meets on Sunday mornings at 9:20 am on lower level of the main building. 


Topics include books of the Bible, Bible leaders, or life topics.  Studies may last from 4 to 12 weeks.  In our fellowship, we share God’s truths and encourage each other in our Christian journeys.

Adult Bible Class  

Meets Sunday mornings at 9:20 am.  Lessons are from the Uniform Series quarterly.  After reading Scriptural text, our leader presents a lesson that illustrates God’s presence in Biblical times and in our contemporary culture as well.  Cultures may change; God does not.  Guests and new members are always welcome!

M & Ms Small Groups 

Meet Wednesday evenings fall, winter, and spring for 6-8 weeks.  Attendees choose from several studies for each study session.  The 1st M is for Meals at 5:30 pm ($5/person or $12/family) and the 2nd M is for More (studies) at 6:15 pm.  This is a great opportunity to meet and make new friends while learning more of God’s word and his plan for us.  (Childcare is available.)

Wednesday Night Life Group 


We meet Wednesday evenings during M & Ms from 6:00-7:30 pm.  Open to couples and individuals…group members choose studies.  Childcare is available.

Grief Support:  Our Sorrow - God's Hope 

This seven week class is designed for those who have experienced the death of a loved one.  We invite you to join us as we learn about the way grief impacts our daily lives, as we share our stories and as we find God's comfort and hope in knowing we are not alone.  Information will be in the worship program and at the Network Table when new groups are scheduled.

Prayer Breakfast 

This group meets every Thursday morning from 

8 – 9:30 am, at the Meadow Hill Restaurant, 2935 E. Prospect Rd., York in the back of the restaurant.  We begin by ordering breakfast, reading the scripture and devotion from the Upper Room.  After breakfast, we share a Bible Study and close with prayer for all matters that are shared with us. Come join us!

Traditional 8 am & 10:30 am Ushers 

Ushers are responsible for welcoming members and guests and helping to seat them.  Other responsibilities include: hand out adult and children’s bulletins, assist acolytes and others participating in the service as needed, introduce guests to others in the pew, collect the offering, count worshipers and all others in the building during worship, and provide security in and around the sanctuary.  Ushers also help with special services throughout the year.

Men and women with friendly smiles and warm handshakes are encouraged to greet at BUMC. 

Greeters are scheduled to serve from 10-10:30 am.

Contemporary Ushers 

Ushers are responsible for collecting the offering and attendance cards during worship.  Ushers can sign up for specific times on an annual schedule.

Contemporary Greeters 

Welcoming, hospitable people are needed to greet at the entrances leading to Trinity Life Center.  Those at the main entrance will hand out worship programs.  Greeters can sign up for specific times on an annual schedule.

Chancel Choir 

This is an adult choir including students grade 9 and above that sings weekly during the months of September to the middle of June. The choir shares anthems and choral works at services, including Thanksgiving, Lenten, Advent, and Christmas Eve special services.  The Chancel Choir offers musical praise to our Triune God on behalf of the congregation.  The preparation for their musical offerings often includes biblical study, context of the composition and text analysis, and musical interpretation.  Anthems and choral works include a variety of styles such as traditional anthems, Southern Gospel, spirituals, classical, and contemporary . An extended work is presented during the Christmas season.  Rehearsals are held in the Sanctuary each Wednesday from 

7:15 to 8:30 pm.  “Praise the Lord!  For it is good to sing praises to God; for it is pleasant, and praise is beautiful.”  Psalm 147:1

Bell Choirs  

Adult Bell Choir meets 11:45-12:15 Sunday mornings in the Bell Room (downstairs) September through May. There are usually 5 performances per year.

Youth Bell Choir (grades 7-12) meets Sundays when children are dismissed from the 10:30am Traditional Service (ie. around 10:50am) in the Bell Room.  Approximately 4 performances per year.

‘The Light’ Contemporary Praise and Worship Team   

We are ‘The Light’….the Contemporary Praise and Worship Team for Bethlehem UMC. News Release Contact    Submits church publicity to local publications.  Information on any church news or special information on programs for the wider community is needed.   Articles are submitted to the York Dispatch, the Community Courier, the York Daily Record via Pointslocal Online, and the church website via Ricardo Medina.  Church members are encouraged to share items to be published.

Card Crafters   

Do you enjoy making hand-crafted cards or would you like to learn?   Bring your own supplies or the group will share to get you started.   Group meets the 4th Tuesday of the month from 10-2 in Fellowship Hall.  Bring a bag lunch and join this friendly group.

Book Discussion Group   

The group selects a book which can either be purchased or obtained from the library.  Group meets the 4th Wednesday at 9:30 am in the Church Parlor.  New faces are welcome at any time.

Lunch Bunch  - 

Do you enjoy trying new restaurants?  Outings are planned for the 3rd Tuesday of the month.  Transportation is provided for those who don’t drive.  Cost of the lunch is your responsibility.  Join this fun group for fellowship and the chance to try somewhere new or an old favorite.  Check at the Network table to find out where the group is going and to sign up.

Reading Circles  - 

This is a good group for those who enjoy reading, but don’t want to commit to meetings or discussions.  Each person in a circle buys one book in December.  Read your book in January then pass it to the next person in the circle.  Buy one book per year and read twelve.
Currently we have two circles of women and one of men.  Books are donated to the church library at the end of the year.

Welcome Team  

“Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing so some have entertained angels without knowing it.”  Hebrews 13:2  This team develops strategies to create a more welcoming culture. Varied skills, gifts and personalities are needed to assure people are comfortable before, during and after the worship experience.  (All who attend BUMC are really part of the Welcome Team as they interact with each other and guests.)  We invite you to join us!

Mission Committee   

Do you have a heart to reach out to mission opportunities both locally and farther afield?  This committee chooses which to support and organizes various events and dinners as fundraisers throughout the year.   Committee meets the 1st Monday of the month at

Mission Trips to CCCD Jamaica  - 

Caribbean Christian Center for the Deaf provides education, health care, and vocational services for deaf people.  Two trips per year – 1 in summer and 1 in fall for a week each- gives you a chance for hands-on service.  Help with building projects, Bible school, and interacting with residents both at the school and the deaf village.  Teens can participate.  Sign language is not necessary.  Some of our members have gone numerous times; they find so much joy in serving.  Curious?

Our Daily Bread   

This program provides a hot lunch Monday 

through Friday at 331 S. George St. in York.  Local churches provide casseroles and help serve.  We cook a meal on Sunday morning before the 1st Tuesday of the month, deliver it on Monday, and serve on Tuesday from 10:30-12:30.

Mr. Sandy’s Homeless Veterans Center (Formerly Helping Hands for the Homeless) 

Local churches provide meals on weekends at two locations in York City.  This is coordinated by Sandie Walker and is open to anyone in need.  Help needed to cook, transport and serve the meals.  Dates change each year.

Emmanuel’s Closet  

This food and clothing bank is located at St. Paul’s UCC on W. Main St. in Dallastown.  Volunteers help bag groceries and clothing the 4th Saturday of the month from 9 am-noon.  (Not open on holiday weekends)

Handyman Group  

This group meets as needed on Saturdays to help with home repairs.  No professional skills necessary, but we would love if you have some.  The fellowship of this group makes you look forward to working on Saturday.  Women and older teens are welcome, too!

Dallastown Carnival Ice Cream Stand 

BUMC sells ice cream sundaes and other treats at the Dallastown Carnival in August.  Funds raised are used for mission initiatives.  Have a fun time with other volunteers and help serve your friends at the carnival.  Adults and teens welcome.  Stand is open throughout the carnival.

Dallastown Halloween Parade   

Snacks are sold during the parade.  Help is needed to prepare and sell food.

Christmas Days in Dallastown 

A community-wide event is held on a Saturday in December where local churches and the local fire company invite vendors to sell their goods.  Local businesses participate with special deals and advertising handouts. Bethlehem's role is to show our love for the Lord by opening our doors "wide," showing a Christ like love to the community so they feel welcome.  Patrons get a sneak peek at our facilities with the hope of touching non-believers and believers so their walk starts or grows with our Lord.  Vendor applications are available by email, phone, network tables, or the BUMC website.

Community Christmas Dinner 

A free turkey dinner with all the trimmings is hosted for the community on Christmas day.  The dinner was started to give those who were alone on Christmas a place to feel the warmth and love of Jesus on this special day.  Volunteers assist with cooking, set-up, greeting, serving, and clean-up in two hour shifts.  Home baked desserts are also needed.  Whole families volunteer and find it a meaningful way to experience the true reason for the season.

Spritz Cookies  

Help bake spritz cookies for sale during the holidays.  A day of baking at the church is done in November and December.  Dates announced in the worship program.

Cracker Baskets 

Gift Baskets filled with snack items are prepared and sold as a fundraiser for BUMC Missions.  Orders are taken in November for delivery in early December.  Helpers are needed to prepare the baskets.

Easter Candy 

Join the famous BUMC chocolatiers to make delicious Easter candy.  No experience necessary.  Candy making is done during the evenings and on one Saturday before Easter.  Times are announced in the worship program.

Maundy Thursday Dinner 


Thursday before Easter is Maundy Thursday.  

Cathy’s wonderful ham loaf and the Tyson’s special hog maw are on the menu.

Various Meals Throughout the Year 

We are known as a congregation that loves to eat and we have a lot of great cooks. 

We host a variety of meals throughout the year and are always looking for help with cooking, decorating, serving and clean-up. 

This is a fun way to fellowship with others.  Watch the worship program and Lamplighter for details.


Mission Central 

You have to see it to believe it!  This UM Mission gathers, warehouses, assembles, and ships supplies to those in need both locally and throughout the world.  Our volunteers spend the 2nd Tuesday of the month assembling flood buckets, health and school kits, and many other items for shipping.  Jobs are not strenuous. Transportation is provided.  We leave from the church at 7:30 and return by 3.  Bring a bag lunch.  Do a worthwhile service while enjoying fellowship.  You will be amazed at what all Mission Central does.

Prayer Chain  

This is a wonderful opportunity for those who don’t want to do meetings or may have some physical limitations.  This group receives names of those requesting prayers.  The names are passed along the chain and you pray for them from the comfort of your home.  Be a blessing.

Prayer Team  

Members of the Prayer Team often spend time in the prayer room through the week or during services (together or alone), or meet with those requesting prayer.  Periodically, we meet to plan vigils, encourage prayer among members, or explore growth in this area.

Prayer Shawl Team  


We make prayer shawls, blankets, and baby blankets by knitting, crocheting, or sewing.  We want to spread God’s love to those in need for any reason by giving them a shawl or blanket blessed by Pastor Roger.  We meet the first Thursday of each month from 9:30 am until 12:00 noon and the third Monday from 6:30 until 8:30 pm at Sue Sharp’s home 140 W Fourth St. Dallastown, PA  17313.  We have a supply of yarn you can use and also accept donations. If you would like to join our team or need a shawl/blanket for yourself or another let us know.  Quilted Prayer Squares are also prepared and sent to members and friends who are facing lifes’ crises.

Visiting Ministry 

We offer friendly, supportive visits for those experiencing illness, injury, limited mobility, or isolation, with the goal of enabling people to give and receive a deeper sense of our community of faith.  This ministry lends itself to creativity and can be very flexible.  Training/tips  available.

Respite Ministry  

“Carry each other’s burdens and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2   Providing companionship/light help during recovery from  injury, illness, surgery, relieving a caregiver, etc. are  examples where Respite Ministry can help.  You volunteer when your schedule allows helping others caught up in life’s circumstances.

We have a wide selection of children and adult books.  Our children’s “All Star” readers and listeners have read over 72,000 books.  The library is located on the lower level and is open whenever the building is open.  If you haven’t browsed the stacks come and check us out (pun intended).  Volunteers help shelve and rotate books and record books read by the children.

Offering Tabulation   

Assist with recording the Sunday offering on Monday mornings.

Snow Shovel Brigade   

Assist with snow removal from church property and sidewalks.  Teens come along and help Mom and Dad.  

Sign-up is announced each fall in the Lamplighter and worship program.


Palm Crosses   

Crosses are made out of palm leaves for distribution at Palm Sunday services.  This group meets the Thursday before Palm Sunday at the church.  We’ll show you how.  Many hands make light work.

Help on Wheels  

Rides to church, appointments, shopping, etc. are provided by the Help on Wheels Team.  Drivers and their contact information are listed in the worship program—current week and following week.  Drivers are only asked to serve 2 weeks a year.  Schedules are placed in drivers’ church mailboxes.  New volunteers are welcome.

Ministry to College Students   

Care packages are sent four times during the school year to our college students.  Help send a little love to those away from home.

Sports Ministries  

Coaches, volunteers, parents, kids, teens, players…even renters and organizations-our hope is to maximize the use of the Trinity Life Center with fun, fellowship and fitness in order to extend the reach of Bethlehem UMC with sports and activities for all ages and skill sets.

BUMC Bowling Team  

Our Team bowls in the Red Lion Church Bowling League which is currently made up of 10 teams representing churches of our area.  We bowl at the Lion Bowling Center in Red Lion.  There are 5 bowlers on our team and we utilize substitutes when one of the regulars is not available.  Cost is $15.00 for the year and $13.00 each evening for 3 games.

BUMC Volleyball Team  

Part of the York Christian League, this co-ed team for those 16 years and older plays Thursday evenings October through March.  Games are 1 hour and played between 6 and 9 pm.    Responsibilities include following church rules, dressing appropriately, and supplying a referee every other week.

BUMC Softball Team  has been playing since 1969. 

It is in the Dallastown Church Softball League.   There are currently 6 teams from other churches in the league. Games start the beginning of May and run until about August. Players must be 16 years or older. The games are double headers and usually only one night a week, unless there are rain make-ups. Currently they are played at either Codorus Church of the Brethren or Bridgeway CC.  Uniform shirts are provided.

Rev. Ron Bowersox Memorial Golf Outing   

This event is held late summer at Cool Creek Golf Club as a fund-raiser for BUMC Missions.  Rev. Bowersox was a former BUMC pastor.  Get a foursome together or we will match you up with one.  Prizes, goodie bags and a delicious meal after a great day of golf are part of the fun.  Volunteers are needed to help with this event.  If you can donate a prize or can help solicit prizes from local businesses, we can use your help.
